Samuel Leonard Lewis was born October 18, 1896 at 2:20 a.m. in San Francisco. His father Jacob was a Vice President of the Levi Strauss Company. His mother was Harriett Rosenthal, the daughter of Lenore Rothschild of the international banking family.
