The Hidden Gift of Cancer – by Aslan Scott

Dear Ones,

The folks at the Center for Spiritual Living recorded my recent talk on the hidden gift of cancer and placed it online at:

https://soundcloud.com/eurekaspiritualcenter/thoughts-on-mortality-the-hidden-benefits-of-cancer

It lasts about 20 minutes and then there are a couple of questions from the group.  I thought you might like the reference, as I’d be happy to talk more about this aspect of life any time…

Much love,
Scott

On the Walk of Saturn

On the Walk of Saturn

Astrologically, Saturn is usually presented, at first, as representing obstacle, difficulty, and frustration. “You can’t always get what you want.” Not only that, but in its extreme, you can’t even get anything you want. My first formal lesson in the astrology of Saturn left me feeling, “That represents life on this earth.” And for me, that was the case at the time. Much later, Murshid Sam looked at my chart and said, “You’ve been thwarted a lot.” (Sun and moon conjunct Saturn square Pluto).

The first introduction to the walk of Saturn is similar. The movement is stunted, or stifled, if you will, and progress seems to come only with great difficulty, like a person with serious muscular disability, yet frustrated with his or her ability to move. Gravity seems stronger.

By way of articulating the other side of it, Saturn exalted, I mention my favorite Japanese scroll that we sometimes hang in our Tea Room. It has a single character, KAN, which means barrier, obstacle, gate. But it also means threshold, and implies passage.

Between the outer and inner Tea gardens there is a gate that is purely symbolic, and can be seen as a “Gateless Gate,” which is the title of the Mumonkan, a collection of 48 Zen koans, compiled from the teachings of early Chan masters in China. Here again, passage is implied by a symbolic barrier.

So, rightly understood, the gate or barrier becomes, with inner work, a threshold and a passage. Saturn, too, is a barrier, testing not only one’s resolve and acceptance, but skill and courage in meeting the challenge of the moment. As such it is also a gate, opening to a passage.

Gurdjieff held that Nature is not conducive to awakening, that is to say, awakening is not natural. It requires human effort, which in turn requires aspiration, and also discontent with being a pawn of nature, subject to all the frustrations that Saturn represents in its ordinary manifestations.

And Saturn exalted? The challenges remain, gravity remains, obstacles are inevitable — but one has mastered them, walking skillfully, upright with deliberation, albeit slowly. One has not overcome them, as one might overcome an enemy in battle, or a rival in competition. One has learned to work constructively with them. And one is stronger for it.

One is not “free” in the superficial sense of the word, but free in a deeper sense. Saturn has no room for sentimentality, or love without strength and skill. It demands that one cannot fly until one has fully mastered gravity. And it knows that birth and death are simply two aspects of life on this earth, forgetting neither.

Most of us cannot manifest exalted Saturn in our daily lives, any more than we can manifest the masters, saints, and prophets. We walk AS IF we had that mastery, and in all the spiritual walks gain a deeper understanding of our aspiration.

DHO Report – Shnede 2018

Dear Family…

Greetings from Virginia..

Ramadan Mu Barrak!

Some comments and impressions of our 35th annual gathering at Hans Shnede:

Over 90 of us came together amidst the splendor of a lush, late spring in Northern Germany.

From California to Moscow & from Edinburgh to Berlin, with all the places in between: it was a splendid International group.

Of course, our concentration was on healing, and we touched on all it’s manifestations – from song and mantra to laughter, plus sharing empowerment through the ritual, the prayers, the walks and the dances.

There was ample space between activities, so there was opportunity for both reflection and absorption.  And the night birds – whippoorwill and cuckoo were magical.

The sung mantras, prayers and chants still reverberate. Mashallah!

It was Spargle Time (white asparagus) once again.  Fresh picked, and only hours old. Our Master of the kitchens’ heart (Atesha) outdid herself. She truly manifests the hearts’ blessing in the preparation of great eats.

We celebrated our Godmother with the “ Aziza Inayat Khan Memorial Candy Giving.”

It is amazing how many of us ‘elders’ become children when the sweets appear.

Below is a photograph of most of the children of Shnede.  The older ones have all grown up with us, and are now campers. They are our future.

2018 Pilgrimage to Lama

Dear ones,

I awoke this morning thinking about Lama and Murshid Sam: I remembered once asking Murshid Sam – ‘What is a Murshid?’

His reply was an instant illumination –

“A Murshid,” he replied, “is someone who knows a step of the dance you have not yet learned. And, they stand in front of you doing this step, so that you can follow it, until you learn it.”
I replied: “and, then, you stand beside them, and watch the one showing them the next step?”
“You got it!” he replied.

This coming June 18-23, we have scheduled a Pilgrimage to honor and remember his life long dedication to the Sufi Message of Spiritual Liberty, and the Dances and Walks he brought through to spread this ideal.

Murshid often quoted Al Ghazalli – “God is your lover. Not your jailer.”

Join with us on Lama Mountain as we celebrate his dedication and his transcendent spirit. Register directly with Lama https://www.lamafoundation.org/event/a-pilgrimage-to-murshid-sam-with-the-dervish-healing-order/ (more information below).

After our D.H.O. Pilgrimage, on June 24, we will be joining with Murshida Darvesha, who is leading a 50 year celebration of the Dances of Universal Peace. Such events are planned world wide, but this is the one we will be at.

For our DHO campers, who choose to stay an extra afternoon, the gathering is free (with a donation requested) – dinner on June 23 and brunch on June 24 will be served (with a donation requested).

Camping on June 23 is free; if you are in housing, please pay the regular Lama costs for your room- https://www.lamafoundation.org/about-lama-foundation/general-info/housing-options/

BUT, please register with Lama, so they may have a handle of how many of us there will be on the Mountain. https://www.lamafoundation.org/event/50th-global-anniversary-of-the-dances-and-walks-of-universal-peace/

All monies from our Pilgrimage will go to Lama, as a way of financially supporting Murshid’s resting place.

Ananda and I look forwards to seeing you on the Mountain to honor and celebrate his life and the accomplishment of his mission. In addition, I look forwards to sharing his version of the Maha Mudra – which he first gave on Lama Mountain in 1970 – in the Only Room (in my presence). And, some of his Tassawuri Walks of the Masters, Saints and Prophets.

Once again, please register for both events early, so Lama and we, may know who and how many will attend.

all blessings and love

Aziza Lusansky-Inayat-Khan

Dear ones,

it is with deep sorrow that I forward this announcement from Hamida.
Aziza is our last living God-parent, both for the DHO and for the Ruhaniat.

Ya Salamo! May she rest in peace within the Heart of God,
and may her reunion with her beloved Hidayat be Rainbows of Light,
and Love, and Laughter.

our healing service starts shortly, so I will stop here,
and write up more for her Memorial Page this afternoon.

Dear Shabda, Sauluddin and Aslan,

to our great regret Aziza, your Godparent, has left us, to join her beloved Hidayat. I am on my way to Munchen, and can tell you that the wonderful Schnede book will be shown in the Museum: so much living and loving energy it shows, and Aziza was so happy when receiving it last year.
If anyone feels like writing something, it can be sent to the Sufi Museum.
With love from Hamida

Happy Birthday, Murshid S.A.M.

Dear all hearts,

Today is Murshid Sam’s birthday celebration.

Born in 1896, a born mystic, he recalled watching the fires from the San Francisco earthquake from Potrero Hill.

Considering who we were when he took us on, there is so much to be grateful for.

Not only did he inspire us, but nurtured and trained, and opened our eyes to the reality of achieving consciousness of the inner worlds.

Ya Shakur Allah!

Looking forwards to seeing you again in June, 2018 at Lama.

But for today – Ice Cream Is On The House!

Protection and Non-Attachment

Saul’s darshan picture from Murshid Sam, Lama 1970

From Murshid Sauluddin:

As we observe the increasing turmoil unleashed in the past weeks,
I am reminded of Hazrat Inayat Khan in the days just prior to World War One,

and Murshid Sam just prior to and during World War Two.

Both kept their attunement to the Spirit of Guidance alive and active.

The Absent Healing Ritual is the most powerful tool I have yet found to facilitate this attunement.

As it invokes in the ritual:

“Use us as a channel of Thy Love, Life and Light, that we may be more able to serve Thee and humanity.”

Allowing this blessing to flow through us is not only beneficial to our community, but to ourselves, our families and the world in general.

Join with us in Portland, Oregon this June 18-23, as we call upon the Shafia to ‘heal our bodies, hearts and souls,’ and send this highly needed blessing out to the world at large.

We will practice both protection and non attachment, and send these energies out to the world at large.

Protection for our selves, our loved ones, and our planet.

Non attachment to the fear energy being generated by those who want a war of religions.

In addition, our program includes:

Healing rituals, healing for areas, Dances of Universal Peace, Healing Zikr, spiritual walks, Ramnam, recitation of the Heart Sutra, the Confraternity Prayers, opening the heart through singing, Sufi stories, Sufi qigong, tea, yoga, the healing power of laughter, meta-meditation, gems and amulets, home work, bed time stories and more on the Ramayana.

Dates: June 18 – 23, 2017

Place: Alton Collins Retreat Center, near Portland, Oregon
Costs per person includes room and meals:
Double room – $575, Triple room – $475
.
If you know that you’re coming, reserve early!

$200 or full payment will hold your place.

To register – Jude Sargent
Please send your deposit or full payment to:

Jude Sargent, 922 Stanyan Street, S.F., CA 94117-3807

Please note: all staff pays full fees, and is given no honorarium.
Monies left over will be distributed to a local charity.

Godmother Aziza’s Upcoming Birthday

Beloved Godmother,

What a joy to have you in our lives.
You are so special to us, and we all deeply appreciate all the blessings you have shared with us.
In your honor we have started a new Shnede ritual, where the children are given candy in your name.
It has been very well received, and even the Big Children line up for some of your Baraka.
Thank you again for taking us on, and for holding the post for so many years, and for holding it so well.
We sing your praises, and send our love.
Yours in thankful service

Sauluddin for your DHO family

Beloved Ones,

Almost 9 months ago Aziza had to let go Hidayat to whom she has been dedicated for so many years. She will have her 95th birthday coming June 26.
She needs a lot of care as she doesn’t walk any more and stays in a wheelchair; the house is very good and the atmosphere is wonderful. So she has the care, there, and we here in Holland try to meet her from time to time and the three of us: Ulma and Joop Moerenburg and me, will meet her in Munich, together with a dear mureed who is living in Munich.
I thought how nice it would be if she would receive lots of letters.
There are two ways:
1) either by e-mail to my address <sufihq@xs4all.nl>, and I shall collate them together and make a booklet of it, so that she can read it again and again (or have someone read it to her).
I am leaving on June 24th, so I need to have them in my mailbox 17th of June, so as to have the time to collect them nicely. If you feel like it, you may add as many hearts or pictures as you want to add.
2) or send a postcard or letter to her to the following address:
Frau U. Lusansky-Inayat-Khan
Haus St. Joseph, WB-2
Luise Kiesselbachplatz 2
D-81377 Munich
Germany
Maybe you know of Sufis or others from whom you know that they would like to write: will you ask them please?
Most loving greetings from Hamida

A New Year’s Message from Saul

Dear Family,

Many of us are still reeling from the last US election results, and our governments shift in priorities.

Our teachings offer us both solace, and a vehicle for working amidst adversity.

Hazrat Inayat Khan, Murshid Sam, Nurunissa Inayat Khan, and our God Father, Hidayat Inayat Khan all were ‘warriors in heart,’ and some even served in the armed forces, or operated as behind the lines partisans.

Their courage is still inspiring, and offers us a pathway where both Heart and Hara are united in purposeful action.

What is most important amidst these times is to Remember who we are, and why we are here.

As mureeds, we are given the blessed opportunity to be channels for the Spirit of Guidance.

As the Absent Healing Service of Hazrat Inayat Khan invokes:

“Let us be a channel of thy Love, Light and Life, that we may be more able to serve Thee and humanity.”

It is now up to us to open ourselves for “Service to the Real.”

Let us direct our hearts-will towards manifesting Peace.  For it to be real, it must come from within us, and spread outwards.

As channels, or co-creators, we move the Divine Will through our actions – both within and without.

Sometimes, even the smallest pebble can start a landslide, or block a pathway outwards.  Murshid Sam told the story of Paul Brunton (A Search in Secret India, and Egypt), who was told by his guru (Ramanamaharshi?) to go to Prague in 193(5?).  He didn’t go, and Sam said that his absence opened the way for the Nazis to invade, and WW2 to begin shortly thereafter.

To carry the energy of Peace is both a duty and a privilage.  This does not at all mean to be passive and surrender to adversity.  But rather it is an inner state from which ones actions arise, and are cradled within.  This is Fudo in action – the merging of Heart and Hara towards the One.

We have much work before us, and it is most important to remember that we are not alone.  But are only the point of the historical march towards The Manifestation of the Message in our Time.

Fear not tomorrow, but rather connect to our transmission, and allow the Spirit of Guidance to direct your hearts actions in the outer world.

Sending only Love and Joy and Peace

yours in Service to the Real
